YURAKU Kinosaki Spa&Gardens
湯楽 Kinosaki Spa&Gardens

Change into a yukata and set off, wooden sandals clacking, for public bathhouse hopping. Yuraku, a wooden ryokan, sits on a quiet lane one street back from the lively main street of Kinosaki. Overnight guests get a free pass to the six public bathhouses, and the nearest is a 3-minute walk away. Back from the baths, it is time for just the two of you. Take, a Shigaraki ceramic tub; Tsuki, with tatami flooring; and Kaze, hollowed out of natural stone: choose your favorite of the three private open-air baths (kashikiri) and have it to yourselves for 40 minutes per group, free of charge. In the evening, enjoy seafood and Tajima beef as only an inn that runs Asaichi Hiroba, a wholesale crab specialist, can serve them. In winter, carefully selected Matsuba crab awaits. Alongside Japanese-modern guest rooms decorated with Kyoto karakami paper, there are just four rooms with a private semi-open-air bath with flowers floating on the water.
